Foreign Policy Failures

GUEST POST by Michael Bowman (Boise, Idaho) —

OUR U.S. FOREIGN POLICY IS AS MESSED UP AS THE REST OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. IT IS NO WONDER WHY WE ARE BECOMING THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE REST OF THE WORLD. WE ARE CONSTANTLY INSULTING OUR LONG STANDING ALLIES AND AT THE SAME HAVE NO COGENT POLICIES IN PLACE TO DEAL WITH OUR ENEMIES.

Iran was once our ally, but we pulled our support for the Shah of Iran, sat back and watched the nation be taken over by a violent and radical sect of Islam. We failed to provide proper protection for our embassy in Tehran and endured as a nation the hostage situation for about a year there. In the mid 80's when the Soviet Union was trying to defeat Afghanistan and bring them into their fold, we choose to arm the Taliban who were aggressively opposing the Soviet Armies. Congressman Richard Stallings of Idaho's 2nd District brought three Taliban fighters to Idaho on a tour to garner support for sending them arms. I met them at a one of our weekly Lion's Club meetings.

We failed to take out Bin Laden in the 90's when much of what we are fighting today could have been avoided. We treated the attack on the Naval ship in Yemen as a criminal act instead of what it was — an overt act of aggression against US. The same for the first attacks on the World Trade Center. We allowed Al Qaeda to grow and expand with knowledge of the danger it posed. We armed Saddam Hussein in Iraq because he opposed our former ally turned enemy Iran. Al Qaeda was expelled from Saudi Arabia and eventually ended up in Afghanistan and partnered with the Taliban, who we once were allies with and supported. Then the attacks on 911, much of the world sat in disbelief as we suffered massive hits and deaths in the space of a few hours. Now our president announced we will be openly sending arms to the Syrian rebels, who are now aligned and supported by boththe Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda. Is your head spinning yet? I believe that much of this has occurred because we as a nation have not had a solid stand in foreign policy much in the same way we do not have a solid working plan for domestic policy.

Congress and The Executive Branch of our government are responsible for both. They have failed over many decades. The reality of what goes on is they spend far more time in perpetually running to stay in office than they do in serving US in a constitutional manner. The idea of Statesmanship, doing what is the best for the nation, has taken a back seat to personal gratification. Witness they have not passed a constitutionally mandated budget in over 4 1/2 years. Congress and the president can act quickly, quietly and efficiently if a matter that benefits them personally arises. They revised the STOCK Act in 12 days from Senator Reid's introduction in the Senate, through the House and signed into to law by Obama. There was no recorded opposition to the Bill and there was also no recorded roll call vote in either Chamber. Yet they cannot put together a cogent plan that will clearly define the course for our nation in both the domestic and foreign arenas. Honesty, integrity and the sense of duty in being servants of the people rather than evolving into tyrants over the people would go along way to solving both probelms.

The immigration issue we are facing today is the result of the failure to set and maintain a solid policy in both arenas. Immigration is the POSTER CHILD OF THEIR FAILURE. It is time we acknowledge this and relieve them all from duty. We need a new team with fresh ideas and a real ambition to serve the nation and not themselves. Join US as we assist you in finding the best people in your states and districts to serve you and by serving you they also serve this nation.
